Certificates offering ceremony for the diploma course on Journalism and Media Studies for its 8th batch and the certificate course on Journalism for the 1st batch

The certificates offering ceremony for the diploma course on Journalism and Media Studies for its 8th batch and the certificate course on Journalism for the 1st batch conducted by Sri Lanka Press Council, was held with the participation of Hon. (Dr.) Bandula Gunawardana, Minister of Mass Media on 22nd September 2022 at the Centre for Banking Studies, Rajagiriya. The keynote address of the function was delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Senior Professor (Dr) Rohana P. Mahaliyanaarachchi. The course coordinators Emeritus Professor Sunanda Mahendra, Professor Tudor Weerasinghe and the Chairman of Sri Lanka Press Council Senior Lecturer Mahinda Pathirana and a large gathering was participated in this occasion.

This Poster Art Competition was held under the theme “Covid -19 Reporting and the Media Responsibility”. The winners were selected under the school & open divisions.

“Ahimi”

The students of the 08 th batch of the Diploma Course in Media Studies & Journalism conducted by Sri Lanka Press Council had filmed their first short film “Ahimi” during last February. The theme, filming and editing was done by the students of this batch. The main objective of this is improving the creativity and practical skills of the students.

Launching “Madya Sameeksha- IV” publication

Launching ceremony of “Madya Sameeksha- IV” scholarly publication by Sri Lanka Press Council, was held on 2nd March 2022 at the auditorium of Department of Government Information. The function was held with the presence of Hon. Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Mass Media and Mr.Anusha Palpita ; Secretary to the Ministry of Media. “Madya Sameeksha- IV” volume is named as Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa tribute volume. The key note address was made by veteran journalist Nalaka Gunawardene while the scholarly lecture on the tribute volume was delivered by Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe. As an honor to Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa, the book was offered to one of his relatives. Sri Lanka Press Council has hitherto published 13 scholarly volumes on newspapers and various fields of media. Consequently, current edition “Madya Sameeksha- IV” is named as “the emergence of social media”. Many scholars on social media has submitted articles for the edition.  

Providing free school supplementary pack for the children of journalists

The function for providing free school supplementary pack for the children of journalists was held with the participation of Honourable Minister Keheliya Rambukwella on 22 nd December 2020 at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. Journalists representing several provinces and media institutions, secretary to the Ministry of Mass media Jagath P. Wijeweera, The Chairman of Sri Lanka Press Council, Senior lecturer Mr.Mahinda Pathirana, Director General of Government Information Nalaka Kaluwewa, member of the board of directors Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe and Press Commissioner Niroshana Thambawita participated in this occasion.

Patterns Creating Canes

The 08th Diploma batch of Journalism and Media studies conducted by Sri Lanka Press Council, had filmed their first documentary programme “ Patterns Creating Canes” recently. The filming was done in Radawadunna are which is famous for producing cane related goods. Hence, they were able to present a productive programme on traditional cane industry and its production process.

Survey on current communication trends and people’s rights-2020

Sri Lanka Press Council conducts various programmes on improving the theoretical & practical knowledge on communication and media studies. One such workshop with regard to this was held in the central province for the teachers of communication and media studies. All the teachers of Kandy,Matale, Nuwara Eliya districts participated for the programme. Moreover they had the opportunity to provide data for the Survey on current communication trends and people’s rights-2020. The main objective of this survey is to inquire about the people’s attitudes, influence and suggestions for the functioning of print, electronic and social media. The following information was revealed during the study.

Expert Conference on Restructuring of Sri Lanka Press Council Act 2021The first in a series of Expert’s conferences on restructuring of Sri Lanka Press Council Act was held on 16th January 2021 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, organized by Sri Lanka Press Council in collaboration with Ministry of Mass Media. The first session was held with the academics of the Departments of Mass Communication, where the restructuring of the Press Council Act and related theoretical and conceptual issues were discussed. Academics representing Sri Jayewardenepura University, University of Kelaniya, Sri Pali Campus and the Open University of Sri Lanka participated. Hon. Member of Parliament Dr. Charitha Herath, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media Jagath P. Wijeweera, Chairman, Sri Lanka Press Council, Mr. Mahinda Pathirana and members of the Board of Directors of Sri Lanka Press Council, Prof Emeritus. Sunanda Mahendra and Director General of Department of Government Information, Mr.Nalaka Kaluwewa were also present. The programme was moderated by Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe, Member of the Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka Press Council and former Rector of the Sri Pali Mandapa.In future, discussions are scheduled to be held with journalists representing all media including social media, trade unions, media associations, media institutions as well as other relevant stake holders to seek their opinion on the amendment of Press Council Act.

Environmental communication Programme

“Environmental communication Programme”

An environmental communication programme was held at “Beach Park” in parallel with the workshop series which is held by Sri Lanka Press Council on 27th of February in 2020. The event was attended by 100 students, teachers and parents of the Environmental Communication Circle of Panadura Balika Vidyalaya.
