The commemoration of 50 th anniversary of Sri Lanka Press Council was held on 09 th of December 2023 at Centre for Banking Studies at Rajagiriya. Concurrently to the event, the diploma awarding ceremony of its’ IX th batch" ,launching the new academic publication of SLPC, “Madhya Sameeksha V”, providing school supplementary packs to journalists’ children and awarding service evaluation certificates and rewards to the staff members were held. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Dr. Bandula Gunawardane ,Minister of Transport,Highways and Mass Media and with the participation of Mr. Anusha Palpita , Secretary to Ministry of Mass Media . Further, Mr. Mahinda Pathirana , incumbent Chairman of SLPC , Mr. Niroshana Thambawita , Press Commissioner and Members of the incumbent Board of directors and former chairmen, Commissioners,university lecturers and a number of people participated to the said event . The students of 9th batch of the diploma course on journalism attended to a field visit to Koggala Martin Wickramasinghe folk art museum on 29th, October, 2022. Making a proper comphrension among the students on the role of Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe who dedicated his service for wellbeing of the Sinhala literature and journalism as well as enhance a practical sense to journalism research were the main objectives of the said field visit. A drama was presented by the students based on his short story named “Irunu Kabaya” under the supervision of Emeritus prof .Mr.Sunanda Mahendra ,coordinator to the course . Further, keynote speech was done by Mrs. Sumudu Chathurani, deputy editor to Silumina paper on the great mission to journalism of Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe at the museum premises. As well as a lecture was conducted by Mr. J. Jayaneththi on behalf of Martin Wichramasinghe’s Trust and a chance was provided to students for watching biographical short film “ Wikumsihawatha” which exposes landmarks of editor’s life. The Contemporary discussion to short filmes named "Peripla" and "Anichchanuga" was organized by Sri Lanka Press Council, held successfully at the institutional premises yesterday. Mr. Vidarshana Kannangara, Mr. Sherly Samarasinghe, Mr. Priyantha Kodippili and Dr. Darshana Ashoka Kumara also participated to the said event. An entertainment program on Nadagam and Noorthi songs " Vasana Dineki Meka " organized by the Sri Lanka Press Council was held at the council premises yesterday. The program was coordinated by Mr. Gamini Kandepola, a journalist while Mr. Lionel Gunathilake, a veteran musician with expertise in Nadagam and Noorthi, and Mr. Priyantha Gamage, president of the old film song fans club contributed as the resource persons. Launching ceremony of “Madya Sameeksha- IV” scholarly publication by Sri Lanka Press Council, was held on 2 nd March 2022 at the auditorium of Department of Government Information. The function was held with the presence of Hon. Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Mass Media and Mr.Anusha Palpita ; Secretary to the Ministry of Media. “Madya Sameeksha- IV” volume is named as Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa tribute volume. The key note address was made by veteran journalist Nalaka Gunawardene while the scholarly lecture on the tribute volume was delivered by Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe. As an honor to Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa, the book was offered to one of his relatives. Sri Lanka Press Council has hitherto published 13 scholarly volumes on newspapers and various fields of media. Consequently, current edition “Madya Sameeksha- IV” is named as “the emergence of social media”.
